Pre-treatment Advice

  • Avoid shaving 24 hours before treatment
  • Avoid waxing in the 24 hours before your massage – or longer for sensitive skin
  • Avoid Botox/Fillers for two weeks prior to your facial massage
  • Avoid any invasive face treatment for 2 weeks prior to your facial massage
  • Laser hair removal cannot be performed on the same day as your Aromatherapy massage
  • We recommend a patch test for anyone with extremely sensitive skin. Please call us on 01962 714 444 to arrange.

Contra-indications

The following may prevent or restrict the treatment. We will conduct a full consultation at your first appointment but please contact us prior to your appointment if any of the following apply to you:

  • If you are under 16 years of age
  • If you have extremely sensitive skin, we recommend a patch test at least 24 hours prior to your appointment
  • Allergies – please let us know if you suffer from any allergies
  • Asthma – we will ask you to smell chosen blends to make sure breathing is not affected by the oils
  • Diabetes – wait until 2 hours after a meal and/or taking insulin before undergoing massage
  • Epilepsy – we will avoid stimulating products such as Rosemary during your treatment. Renewing Rose, Support Equilibrium and Support Supersensitive oils are recommended
  • Cancer – If you are currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy, we will ask that doctor’s approval is sought prior to the treatment. If you have been given the all-clear, all Aromatherapy Associates treatments can be performed
  • Medication – please wait a minimum of 3 weeks after starting a new medication and having an aromatherapy massage. We also ask that you check any side effects of medications and their interaction with aromatherapy products
  • Recent surgery – please disclose if you have undergone any recent surgery – it may be necessary to hold off on massage treatments for a period of time if you have undergone major surgery or we may be able to avoid the area in the case of minor surgery
  • Vaccinations – leave 24 hours after undergoing a vaccine and having a massage as you may experience an increased immune response
  • Other therapies – aromatherapy massage treatments cannot be performed the same day as any other powerful therapies such as acupuncture or osteopathy
  • Pregnancy – massage only available from week 14 of pregnancy. A doctor’s note will be required if you have a poor obstetric history (e.g. miscarriage or bleeding)
  • Heat treatments e.g. sauna, steam room, sunbed, sunbathing. You should undertake these before rather than after an aromatherapy massage and ensure your body has cooled down before the treatment. For maximum absorption avoid swimming or vigorous exercise for 6- 8 hours after treatment
  • If you are under the influence of recreational drugs or alcohol you will not be able to undergo the treatment
  • Waxing – avoid waxing 24 hours prior to your appointment. If you have been waxed in the 24 hours prior to your appointment, this area will be avoided
  • Contagious skin conditions
  • Please let us know if you have any metal plates or pins, injuries or areas of bruising or pain and we will adapt the treatment accordingly

Aftercare advice

  • Take 10-15 minutes to rest and relax following your massage
  • For maximum benefit leave the oils on your skin for at least 2-3 hours
  • Replenish fluids with plenty of water and restricting alcohol and caffeine intake
  • Refrain from heat exposure (e.g. sauna, steam room, sunbed), sunbathing and vigorous activities immediately after, as they may prevent full absorption of the oils
  • If you have received massage with Revive Morning Body Oil or Support Equilibrium, due to citrus oil content, please shower before exposing your skin to UV light
  • Consult your therapist for follow-up treatment or a program of continued treatments
  • Continue your treatment benefits at home by using the appropriate products indicated by your therapist
